Twelve years ago, I was addicted to an anime called Rurouni Kenshin. I would aways be excited for it to come onto the television so I could watch the next episode. It was one of the things that kept me sane during high school. Too bad my mom hated it. Much to my surprise, recently Rurouni Kenshin has been made into three live action movies.
Rurouni Kenshin is about a wandering samurai in the Meiji era, who goes to the countryside, offering protection to those who need it. He does this to atone for all the murders he committed during the war that had recently ended. During the war, he was a well known assassin named Hitokiri Battosai. However after the war he took the name Himura Kenshin.
Along his journey to atone for his sins, he comes across a woman named Kamiya Kaoru. After he helps her, she offers a place for him to stay in her dojo. From there he continues to atone for his sins and makes lots of friends. Yet, he also still meets and has to defeat enemies as well.
It was a world where I wanted to live in. Anything was better than High School and my family life. I wanted Kenshin, Kaoru and their friends to be my family and when I watched this show, they were. I was an angst ridden teenager who suffered from depression and anxiety. Rurouni Kenshin was a world where I felt safe and I highly admire this anime series since it made me feel that way. That and it had its funny moments as well.
So the fact that three live action movies have been created based off of this story, I’m extremely excited. I feel a little dumb though that they came out back in August, September and October. But I can’t wait to get them and to watch them!
